Arizona Scorpions

Welcome to the homepage of the 2008 expansion team, the Arizona Scorpions. Arizona is the first multi-city team in the USCL, as they will be playing some of their matches in Tucson and the others in Phoenix. Watch the games live at the Internet Chess Club.

After missing the Postseason by the closest of margins in 2008, the Scorpions came into 2009 showcasing great determination and enthusiasm.  The dedication seemed to pay off, with Arizona being near the top of the Western Division Standings for the entire season, this time comfortably achieving their playoff spot with a week to spare and eventually finishing third in the Division.

Unfortunately, the Scorpions' first playoff match did not manage to go according to plan, with the powerful San Francisco Mechanics overwhelming them in the Quarterfinals.

Like several other teams, even though the last match of the season ended in disappointment, Arizona will without doubt look back at 2009 as a very positive overall season and something to really build on.  The addition of GM Alejandro Ramirez was certainly a big part of this improvement as was the strong play by their young star NM David Adelberg.  With such an enthusiastic team and after such a strong showing in 2009, their team and fans are probably already looking forward to what further break throughs can be made to help their next season have an even better result.

Chess.com was the main sponsor of the 2009 Arizona Scorpions!

Southern Arizona Chess Association (SACA) and the Arizona Chess Federation, Inc. (ACFI) both generously sponsored the Arizona Scorpions during the 2009 season, adding to the idea that this team
is a part of the Arizona community. The mission of both of these non-profit organizations is to promote chess in Arizona, and this sponsorship ideally fits the Scorpions. Many of the players on the Scorpions are well entrenched in Arizona Chess and its expansion and have been a part of these organization for years.

The corporation Abstrax also generously offered an incredible site for the team to play at in the Phoenix area.
