When the Philadelphia Masterminds joined the USCL, they chose the name "Masterminds" partly because of Julia R. Masterman's well documented success in the scholastic chess arena. Little did they know that there was a budding chess club that called themselves the Masterminds, organized by Lateef Street, a Masterman alumnus. There was no vicious copyright battle, however the Philadelphia team felt it would be prudent to have a more independent name. It was felt that the "Inventors" was a historical and unique name that aptly sums up the contributions that Benjamin Franklin made to chess and to the nation in the 18th century. Philadelphia hopes that being armed with a new nickname will help guide them to their first ever playoff berth in 2007.
