GM
Cristian Chirila (DAL) vs GM Melikset Khachiyan
(LA) 0-1 wins 2011 Game of the Year! With the not so common Schliemann defense, GM Khachiyan made the game interesting from the get go, followed it up with a nice exchange sacrifice in the middlegame, and then finished the game off with a nice King maneuver resulting in a the trapping and winning of a piece. With two first place votes, one second place vote, and no low rankings, this game cleanly eclipsed all the other games in total score, making it the clear and well deserved winner. Finishing in second place was the last of SM Sammour-Hasbun's strong efforts, a rich Najdorf, full of tactics like most of Sammour-Hasbun's games and including a nice finish. This game too got some very high rankings, making it solidly second, easily outscoring the games behind it. The 2011 Game of the Year Contest is now complete and with it, the 2011 season can be put completely in the books. Congratulations again to all the players who made the season so exciting and memorable for the fans, in particular the five prize winning games in the 2011 GOTY Contest. Stay tuned as we announce some new developments that will take place as we look forward to August and the League in 2012, the eighth season of the USCL! |

SM
Jorge Sammour-Hasbun (BOS) vs IM Robert Hungaski
(NE) 1-0 finishes 4th Place in the Game of the
Year Contest The final Wildcard game in the contest has been knocked out, and despite managing an impressive Top Five finish, we will not have a Wildcard game winning this year's contest like last season. The judges' praised the accuracy of White's play and strong exchange sacrifice, with their only slight qualm being with the game's lack of fireworks which kept it out of the very top of most of their rankings. But with two games out of three still left, Sammour-Hasbun still has an excellent chance to take win his unprecedented second Game of the Year Award. |

Contest It was one of the more unique games in the contest, with White embarking on an unusual King walk before delivering the knockout blow. The judges' definitely seemed to take notice of that with it receiving four high rankings and an overall Top Five finish. |
